Malta, NY – Kenny Tremont, Jr. showed just why he is one of the kings of the Great Race Place Friday night when he picked up the Upstate GMC Dealers DIRTcar Modified feature event win. Tremont’s main championship challenger and defending track champion Brett Hearn charged through the field to finish second, however, he was later disqualified in post-race technical inspection due to an illegal drive shaft. The disqualification means that Tremont now holds a 48 point lead over Hearn in the championship battle.
Other winners during the night were Jack Gentile (Sportsman), Robbie Speed (DIRTcar Pro Stock), Andrew Buff (Limited Sportsman), Randy Miller (Street Stock) and Steve Ryan and Phil DeFiglio (Greg’s Towing & Repair Four Cylinders).
New Jersey’s Rich Scagliotta and second generation driver Jimmy Cottrell led the field to the green with Scagliotta taking the early lead over Don Ronca, Cottrell, Ray Hoard and Matt Depew. Cottrell had the Cottrell Racing mount hooked up on the top side and took over number two on lap four. Hoard followed Cottrell past Ronca for third on lap six.
By lap nine the field closes on the lapped car of Dylan Scribner. Scriber served as a pick and that allowed Cottrell to take the lead with Hoard following into second and Scagliotta dropping to third. Soon after Kenny Tremont, Jr. moved past Depew for fifth. On lap 14 Tremont moved past Ronca for position number four. Tremont then made his way past Scagliotta for third on lap 16.
At the half way point Cottrell remained as the race leader with Hoard second and a fast approaching Tremont third. Tremont dives under Hoard for second on lap 21 and immediately closes on Cottrell. On lap 22 Tremont took the lead from Cottrell.
Meanwhile as 15th place starter Tremont pulled away from the field, 14th place starter Brett Hearn entered the top five. Hearn took over fifth from Depew on lap 25 and set his sights on the top four. On lap 29 Hearn caught his fellow Garden State racer and a lap later took over position number four. Within a lap Hearn was under Hoard for third.
Hearn’s charge wasn’t enough as Tremont pulled away for the win in the caution free event. Hearn made a last lap pass on Cottrell for second, with Cottrell settling for third. Hoard held on for fourth and Scagliotta fifth. During post-race technical inspection Hearn was found to have an illegal drive shaft and was disqualified. The disqualification moved Ronca into the final top five. A total of 27 Upstate GMC Dealers DIRTcar Modified drivers entered the event with heat races being won by Elmo Reckner, Matt Delorenzo and Scagliotta.
Jack Gentile won his second Sportsman feature event of the season. It was the veteran driver’s eighth career win at the track.
Nick Anatriello and Joe Orlando led the field to the green with Anatriello taking the early lead over John Proctor and Orlando. Anatriello’s time out front was short lived as he spun in turn two on lap one, collecting Nick Lussier. When racing resumed Proctor held the lead over Orlando, Jack Gentile, Jack Swinton and Jake Scarborough. Gentile moved past Orlando for second on lap five with Swinton following past a lap later.
As the laps clicked off Proctor and Gentile began to distance themselves from the field. The field was slowed on lap nine for Lussier who again had issues in turn two, eliminating the leader’s advantage. Proctor fired first on the restart with Connor Cleveland moving into fifth. A lap la ter four drivers tangled in turn two, causing the fourth yellow flag of the event.
On the restart Gentile moved into the lead however an incident involving a handful of drivers, including Rocky Warner slowed the field. Jack Speshock was sent to the rear for his involvement in the wreck. When racing resumed Gentile held the lead over Proctor and Orlando. On lap 12 Swinton moved past Orlando for third. With ten laps to go Gentile had put about a straightaway’s distance between himself and second place Proctor.
Despite a lap 21 restart and a hard charge by Cleveland, Gentile was able to bring home the win. Cleveland settled for second with Jeremy Pitts third, Proctor fourth and Swinton fifth. Heat races for the 31 car field were won by Anatriello, Gentile, Orlando and Proctor.
Robbie Speed won the 25 lap DIRTcar Pro Stock feature event. Ed Thompson got loose on the start of the event and the ensuing pile up collected numerous cars including Chuck Dumblewski, Kenny Martin, Kim Duell and Cale Kneer. When racing resumed Dave DePaulo held the race lead over Bill Smith and Jeff Washburn. Speed moved under Washburn for third on lap five and set his sights on Smith.
The race was slowed on lap 11 for Martin, who slowed on the back stretch. On the restart DePaulo held the lead with Smith and Speed following. On lap 13 Speed took second from Smith and then two laps later the lead from DePaulo. Brandon Emigh followed past for second. Duell spun on lap 17 to force a restart.
On the restart Speed held the lead over Emigh and DePaulo. Speed led the rest of the way to take the win over Emigh, DePaulo, Dan Older, Sr. and Smith. Bernie Companion crossed the line fifth but was sent to ear for contact with Byron Wescott on the last lap. Heat races for the 21 car field were won by DePaulo, Smith and Martin.
Andrew Buff won his third Limited Sportsman event of the season. With his third feature win, the second generation driver has graduated to the Sportsman division. Zach Daurio was the first to lead the 15 lap event. By the halfway point Buff was all over him from the second position. With five laps to go Buff moved past Daurio for the race lead. Despite a late race restart Buff was able to pull away for the win. Ken Conroy finished second with Daurio third, Chris Ronca fourth and Mike Coffey fifth. A total of 21 drivers entered the night’s action with heat races being won by Brandon Pitcher, Ronca and Conroy.
Randy Miller picked up the 20 lap Street Stock feature event win. It was his sixth win of the season. Matt Mosher grabbed the early lead before giving way to Frank Monroe on lap two. Eleventh place starter Jason Meltz took the top spot away on lap five as the field fanned o ut three wide behind him. Miller though was the driver on the move. After starting 23rd on the field, Miller took over third on lap ten and set his sights on second place Hunter Sanchez. Miller made a move under Sanchez heading into turn three on lap 11 for second and exiting turn four he was the race leader. Miller was able to lead the rest of the way in his Nanola sponsored machine. Meltz finished second with Bill Duprey third, Al Relyea fourth and Josh Coonradt fifth.
