Proctors Dominate Closing Night at Albany-Saratoga
9/9/11: MALTA, NY — Friday was Championship Night at Albany-Saratoga but it turned into Proctor Night.
Fred Proctor started on the pole and led flag-to-flag in the 35-lap NASCAR Modified feature, holding off a strong charge from Cody Sargen to put his name into the NASCAR Modified record books. But Proctor has been to Victory Lane in the past. He won budget sportsman features in both 2007 and 2009, when the track still had a clay surface, and had a pair of sportsman victories on the asphalt last season.
Ron Proctor came across the finish line seventh and added his name to the illustrious list of track champions that includes Brett Hearn, Jack Johnson, Ken Tremont Jr., C.D. Coville, Jerry Cook, Bill Wimble and Lou Lazzaro. Ironically, the seventh-place finish ended Proctor’s string of nine straight top-five finishes. In 15 events this season, Proctor was in the top five 12 times.
Proctor, who also won the point championship at Devil’s Bowl Speedway, which had its final four races rained out, is in line for a lucrative payout from the NASCAR point fund, as each individual track championship is worth $3,000.
Sargen, who has been knocking on the door all season, had to settle for his second straight runner-up finish, just a couple of car lengths behind Fred Proctor. Joe Williams, John Proctor and Hunter Bates completed the top five.
Dan Petronis locked up the pro late model championship with his sixth victory of the campaign, and Frank Monroe won the Renegades feature, as well as the track title. The win was Monroe’s fifth of the season.
Teenager Matt Pappa won the INEX Legends feature, his ninth win of the year, and John McCarron won the Bomber Warriors feature. Mark Lindblade came across the finish line second, and took home the track title.
Although the regular season has concluded, Albany-Saratoga Speedway will reopen on Oct. 15 for the annual Halloween Havoc. Watch the Champlain Valley Racing Association website at www.cvra.com for additional details.
