More bonus programs created at Albany-Saratoga
MALTA – The bonus incentives at Albany-Saratoga Speedway, which initially looked like a light winter snowfall, have turned into an avalanche.
Brian Madsen got it started when he announced the return of his Madsen Overhead Doors Back-to-Back Bonus for modifieds, as well as the addition of a back-to-back bonus for the sportsman division.
But in the last week, three other support divisions have picked up bonus sponsors.
When the regular season opens next month, the limited sportsman will be competing for the Doug Wholey’s Ideal Excavating Back-to-Back Bonus. Any limited sportsman driver who can win two features in a row will receive a $250 bonus.
Wholey is no stranger to Albany-Saratoga. His son Craig has competed in the limited sportsman division for the last two years, picking up four wins in 2022, which graduated him into the regular sportsman division this year.
“I’ve always been a big-time supporter of racing,” said Doug Wholey in discussing the bonus. “I used to race at Riverhead and I’ve probably sponsored cars in every division there. I asked Lyle (Albany-Saratoga Speedway promoter Lyle DeVore) about sponsoring a division in the past, but nothing came of it, so I’m going to do the bonus.”
The pro stocks will be chasing the Glove City Transportation Back-to-Back Bonus, which will also be $250 to any driver who can win two feature events in a row. Glove City Transportation is located in Gloversville, N.Y. and is a long-time sponsor of pro stock driver Luke Horning, who was instrumental in setting up the bonus.
“Lare Orcutt (one of the principal partners of Glove City Transportation) is a good friend of mine and had been talking about doing more this year (in terms of sponsorship), so I talked to Lyle and we set this up,” said Horning, who had three wins at Albany-Saratoga Speedway last season.
The street stocks will be competing for free pit passes courtesy of Billy Hodges, a motorsports journalist whose social media hashtag is @BFORTHEV. In the @BFORTHEV Back-to-Back Bonus, any street stock driver who wins two features in a row will receive two free pit passes. If the streak goes to three consecutive wins, the bonus will increase to three pit passes.
Cars will hit the historic track on Route 9 in Malta, N.Y. for a practice session on Friday, April 7, with the 58th season of racing scheduled to begin on Friday, April 14.
