Madsen boosts bonus money for Malta Massive Weekend
MALTA – With Malta Massive Weekend at Albany-Saratoga Speedway turning into the unofficial Ken Tremont Jr. retirement party, more bonus money has been secured that celebrates the iconic No. 115.
Brian Madsen of Madsen Overhead Doors, which sponsors both the modified and sportsman Madsen Back-to-Back Bonus each week at Malta, will be offering bonus money in $115 increments for the Super DIRTcar Series big-block modified race on Saturday, Sept. 23.
“We’ll be paying $115 to the fast timer, $115 to each of the heat race winners and $115 to each consolation winner,” said Madsen on Monday.
“We’ve been doing this (dirt track racing) since 1980, and when we first got to open wheel cars, we got our feet wet with the Tremonts, that’s where we got our start. I remember going to Weedsport on Sundays with them, sitting between Ken and Big Ken, and they’d put in a cassette playing Conway Twitty music. Those were fun times.
“Deep down, there’s no better family in racing than the Tremonts,” Madsen added.
Tremont, a 13-time modified champion at Albany-Saratoga who sits third on the all-time win list with 81 victories, announced earlier this summer that Malta Massive Weekend would be his final time behind the wheel of the No. 115.
The Super DIRTcar Series race already has a Tremont theme, as it will be 115 laps in distance and pay $11,500 to win, as well as offering a guaranteed starting spot in the Billy Whittaker Cars 200 at Oswego next month.
The Friday portion of Malta Massive Weekend could even overshadow Saturday’s racing. Because of the rainout on Sept. 8, promoter Lyle DeVore has added the Upstate Chevy Dealers Autism Awareness Night “Dare to Be Different” feature, which will pay $10,000 to win, to the card on Sept. 22, which also includes a Super DIRTcar 358 Modified Series race and a DIRTcar Sportsman Championship Series feature.
Albany-Saratoga Speedway pro stock driver Jordan Modiano, the driving force behind the Autism Awareness Night, already has 46 drivers registered for qualifying, and because of the rainout, even more drivers will have an opportunity to take part in the awareness/benefit night.
