Malta, NY – During the 2002 racing season, Brett Hearn set the record for the most consecutive DIRTcar Modified feature wins at Albany-Saratoga Speedway. Those six wins propelled the New Jersey superstar to his first track championship at the fast, four tenths of a mile oval. With the points lead firmly in his grasp, Hearn moved one step closer to not only his seventh track championship but rewriting his own record on Friday night by picking up the 35 lap DIRTcar Modified feature event win, his fourth straight.
The Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprints shared the headlines Friday night with The Cobra, Chuck Hebing picking up the 25 lap A-Main victory. Other winners on the night include Hunter Bates (Sportsman), Robbie Speed (DIRTcar Pro Stocks) and Randy Miller (Street Stocks). The scheduled 15 lap Limited Sportsman feature event was postponed to this coming Friday night due to curfew.
Mother Nature intervened in the night’s racing program. Rain started to fall as the second Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprint heat race rolled on to the track. Just under an hour later racing resumed due to the great work by track promoter Lyle DeVore and staff.
Pep Corradi and Mark Kislowski brought the field to the green flag with Corradi taking the early lead over Kislowski, Floyd Billington, Rich Ronca and JaMike Sowle. The leaders would stay in this order until lap five when an invading Andy Bachetti spun the Garrity Asphalt Reclaiming number 34 in turn two, causing the first caution flag.
When racing resumed Corradi would be the leader over Kislowski, Billington, 11th place starter Peter Britten and Ronca. By this time Hearn had made his way to seventh from the 15th starting position. Hearn claimed the sixth position from Sowle on lap seventh while at the same time Britten moved past Billington for third. On lap eight Hearn’s charge continued as he took over fifth from Ronca and then two laps later fourth from Billington.
The second and final caution flag slowed the field on lap ten when numerous cars were involved in a turn two jingle. Among those involved were Elmo Reckner, rookie Brett Wright and Matt Depew. On the restart Corradi would lead however Kislowski and Britten would make it three wide coming out of turn four to force Corradi to third with Kislowski the new race leader. Hearn and Billington followed.
It did not take long for Hearn to close in on the leaders and on lap 12 he overtook Corradi for third. On lap 16 Hearn moved the Madsen Overhead Doors number 20 past Britten for second and immediately challenged Kislowski for the lead. Kislowski held off Hearn for two laps however gave way on lap 18. On lap 22 the leaders entered heavy traffic for the first time and Hearn used it to his advantage by lengthening his lead.
Kenny Tremont, Jr. saw his night end on lap 25 as he pulled the familiar number 115 pit side while running in the 11th position. Hearn meanwhile was pulling away from Kislowski and in the end picked up his 111th feature win at the Great Race Place. Kislowski finished second with Britten third, Corradi fourth and Billington fifth. Heat races for the 28 car field were won by Billington, Corradi and Kislowski.
Matt Tanner and Chuck Hebing led the Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprint A-Main event to the green with Tanner taking the early lead over third place starter Jessica Zemken, Hebing, Shawn Donath and Jeff VanDusen. Tanner held the lead while Zemken and Hebing battled for the second position. With Hebing running high and Zemken low, Hebing took over the second position on lap four.
Hebing immediately was all over Tanner for the lead as the duo entered slowed traffic on lap six. Tanner was able to hold the lead through traffic as Zemken would join the lead battle. Kevin Ward, Jr. brought out the first of two caution periods on lap seven when he broke after spinning in turn two.
Following the double file restart Hebing would be the race leader with Tanner, Donath, Zemken and tenth place starter Steve Poirier following. On lap ten Donath moved past Tanner for second with Zemken taking third from the Stephentown, New York driver on lap 13.
Donath’s good run came to an end on lap 14 when his number 53 showed heavy smoke entering turn three. The subsequent oil that leaked on his tires caused him to slide into the turn four wall and overturn. He was not injured.
Hebing and Zemken led the field back to the green with Hebing holding the lead over Zemken, Poirier, Tanner and Jason Barney. By lap 17 both Barney and Jeff Cook had passed Tanner, moving the early race leader out of the top five. With five laps to go Zemken was closing on Hebing and on lap 22 was along side the former series champion.
In the end Hebing was able to navigate through the slower traffic and hold off Zemken for the win. Zemken finished second with Poirier third, Barney fourth and Cook fifth. Heat races for the 25 car field were won by Joe Trenca, Tanner and Barney while the B-Main was won by Ward.
Hunter Bates picked up his fourth career Sportsman division feature event. The win was the first on the clay surface for the 2010 Sportsman division track champion. Joe Orlando took the early lead and holding it until a lap 12. On lap 12 Bates overtook Orlando for the lead and pulled away from the field. Bates brought home the win over defending track champion Jeremy Pitts, Jack Speshock, Jake Scarborough and Robert Bublak. No heat races were scheduled due to the ESS being in town however a B-Main was held with Chris Murray taking the win. A total of 30 drivers entered the event.
Robbie Speed won the 25 lap DIRTcar Pro Stock feature event. The win was his first career triumph at the Albany-Saratoga Speedway. Dave DePaulo was the early race leader, leading until Bill Smith took over the top spot on lap two. Smith held the lead until lap 21 when Speed was able to make the winning pass. Speed took the win over Jeff Washburn, Smith, Byron Wescott and Brandon Emigh. A total of 19 drivers entered the event.
Jon Miller won his third Don Don’s Delights Street Stock division feature event of the season in the divisions 20 lap event. Miller took the lead on a lap ten restart and held off Bill Duprey for the win. Yule Cook finished third with Jody Thew fourth and Dave Stickles fifth. Jason Meltz crossed the line third but was disqualified following the event. A total of 16 drivers entered the event.
