Malta, NY — Ronnie Johnson might not have his Tuesday night program figured out, but there’s certainly nothing wrong with his Friday night program.
After blowing the rear end in his car in Tuesday’s night “Big Show 10” Super DIRT Series race at Albany-Saratoga Speedway, Johnson bounced back and picked up his second win of the season in Friday night’s 35-lap modified feature at the historic Malta track.
Johnson, who picked up a $500 bonus from Amsterdam Trailer Repair for his win, started 13th Friday night, but that proved to be a lucky number.
Johnson had rocketed into the top five by lap 12, and was challenging Elmo Reckner for the lead on lap 22. Johnson moved in front on lap 22, ducking under Reckner coming out of the second turn, but before the lap was completed, the yellow flag flew, putting Reckner back out in front.
On the restart, Reckner moved into the high groove, while Johnson remained on the low side, and it only took three more laps before Johnson had the lead for good.
On June 22, Johnson finished second after starting 24th. This time, he finished one spot better.
“I’ve got a lot of track time and a lot of experience on this track,” said Johnson, responding to a question about his back-to-back top-two finishes. “We blew the rear end Tuesday night, but my crew worked hard to get me ready for tonight. We’re just really going good right now.”
Marc Johnson finished second, while points leader Brett Hearn was third. He was followed by Ken Tremont and Reckner.
Kim Duell recorded his second win of the year in the 25-lap pro stock feature, holding off a late charge from Rob Yetman.
The lead changed hands three times before Duell moved out front on lap nine. A restart on lap 11 allowed Chuck Dumblewski to move past Duell, but another restart two laps later helped Duell put the Curtis Lumber Wagon back on the point.
Yetman was charging from his 16th starting position and moved into second with three laps to go, but Duell hung on, even though he said after the win that he was losing his brakes, which really hampered him in turns three and four.
Connor Cleveland was first under the checkered flag in the 25-lap sportsman feature, finishing over two and a half seconds ahead of Andrew Buff, with Jeremy Pitts a close third.
Davis Boisclair held off Justin Buff to win the limited sportsman feature, and defending champion Al Relyea recorded his first win of the season in the street stock feature.
The four-cylinders were also in action, with Steve Ryan dominating the field, Johnny Bennett was the first single-cam car across the finish line.
The card on Friday, July 6, will include the King of Dirt sportsman series.
