Malta, NY – Brett Hearn came into Friday night’s racing program at the Albany-Saratoga Speedway the winner of the past five Upstate GMC Dealers DIRTcar Modified feature events. The win streak put him one win away from tying his own 2002 track record. When the checkered flag waved following the 35 lap feature event it was a different certain Hall of Fame driver who landed in victory lane and in the process broke a streak of his own in what could only be described as thrilling fashion.
Kenny Tremont, Jr. won his first race at the Great Race Place just over 32 years ago and since that inaugural win has compiled 58 more wins and 12 track championships at the track. It was only fitting that the driver to end Hearn’s winning streak did so by ending his winless streak.
The Sand Lake Slingshot came into the night winless on the 2014 season however that all changed when he edged out veteran Jeff Trombley for the win.
“I have to thank everyone who is involved,” Tremont told track co-announcer Mike Warren. “All of the guys have been working hard and I have to thank Rifenburg Construction and S&S Asphalt Paving and everybody else.”
In other action Tim Hartman, Jr. won an equally thrilling Sportsman event. The event was the second leg of the Featherfoot Warrior Sportsman Series and paid Hartman $1,000 for the win. Kim Duell won the DIRTcar Pro Stock feature event while Jack Bublak (Limited Sportsman), Josh Coonradt (Don Don’s Delights Street Stocks) and Steve Ryan (Greg’s Towing and Repair Four Cylinders) also picked up feature event wins.
The night was also New York State Stock Car Association (NYSSCA) Night. The organization gave out safety awards to its members.
Trombley and Elmo Reckner brought the Upstate GMC Dealers DIRTcar Modified field to the green with Trombley taking the early lead over Reckner, Tremont, Mike Perrotte and Don Ronca. Perrotte’s time up front lasted only two laps as both Ronca and Neal Stratton would get past him for fourth and fifth.
Tremont meanwhile was on the move. After starting from the eighth position, Tremont would challenge Reckner for second by lap three and within two laps would put the S&S Asphalt Paving number 115 into the second position. As the race reached the lap seven mark Tremont was all over Trombley and at times alongside.
The first of four caution periods would slow the field on lap ten when Floyd Billington came to a stop in turn number three. Trombley remained the leader on the restart with Tremont, Reckner, Jeremy Wilder and Ronca completing the top five. Stratton moved back into the top five on lap 12, forcing Ronca to sixth.
Matt Depew slowed on lap 14 causing the caution flag to wave for the second time. When racing resumed Trombley would be the race leader with Tremont, Reckner, Ronnie Johnson and Stratton completing the top five. The driver on the move was Marc Johnson. Johnson moved into sixth on the restart after starting 18th.
On this restart Tremont was able to keep with Trombley, something that would stay true to the end. Johnson moved past Stratton for the fifth position on lap 20 while Ronnie Johnson took over third from Reckner a lap later.
The caution flag brought the field back together on lap 24 when Stratton’s good run went south. The second generation driver from Vermont came to a stop in turn four. Trombley held the lead on the restart with Tremont in second, Reckner regaining third, Marc Johnson fourth and Ronnie Johnson fifth. Marc Johnson moved past Reckner for third on lap 25 and started to close on the building battle between Trombley and Tremont.
With five laps remaining the top three drivers were under a blanket all looking for the top spot. Tremont was able to get alongside Trombley and lead lap 31 by a nose at the line. With slower cars lurking ahead, the veteran duo continued to run side by side. Tremont chose the extreme top side with Trombley down low and Johnson contemplating his next move from a very close third position. Tremont would take the lead in slower traffic just after the lap was completed.
The third and final caution flag would not only momentarily end the Trombley and Tremont battle but ruin Johnson’s potential win. Trombley and Johnson came upon the slower car of Brett Haas. Haas would get loose in between turns three and four and make contact with Trombley. The contact forced the veteran from Altamont into Johnson. The contact, which was very slight, caused Johnson to spin in turn four. Johnson would finish 17th.
Tremont remained the leader on the restart with Trombley a very close second. Reckner would be third with Mark Kislowski and Ronnie Johnson completing the top five. Trombley was fast and on lap 33 gets back alongside of Tremont and would lead the lap.
The talented duo had the crowd on their feet for the remaining two laps as they ran side by side around the beautiful four tenths of a mile oval. Tremont way up high and Trombley low is how they ran for the remainder of the race. At the checker Tremont would take the win by less than a nose. Trombley finished second with Reckner, Johnson and Kislowski completing the top five.
A total of 29 Upstate GMC Dealers DIRTcar Modifieds entered the night’s action with heat race wins going to Reckner, Trombley and Stratton.
“I tried to give it away the best that I could,” Tremont said. “Jeff really ran well, we had a great race. There was plenty of room on the top but we couldn’t get it done for the longest time.”
As for Hearn, following pre-feature hot laps he was stopped on the front stretch and offered a shot at some more money by the voice of the Great Race Place, Danny Martin.
“Lyle (DeVore) told me to offer you $500 to start dead last tonight,” Martin said.
Hearn, at the urging of the large crowd, took the challenge. He would start the feature from the last position and if he could end up in victory lane, would earn an extra $500. It was not to be for Hearn. The Jersey Jet moved up as high as seventh before slipping to ninth late.
Tim Hartman, Jr. picked up the win in the second leg of the Featherfoot Warrior Sportsman Series. The event paid the second generation driver $1,000 for the win. It was Hartman’s fifth career win at the track.
Bert Film and Scott Duell led the field to the green with Duell taking the early lead. After four cautions in the first five laps, Duell emerged as the race leader over Mike Ostrander and Hartman. Colin Bokus, who moved up from the Limited Sportsman this week spun on lap 13 to set up the fourth restart. Duell led once racing returned to action however Hartman was all over him.
The lead duo battled hard over the remainder of the race, even with one more restart thrown in. Duell and Hartman came out of turn four on the final lap side by side with Hartman nipping Duell from the outside at the line for the win. Duell would have to settle for second with Ostrander third, Jeremy Pitts fourth and Cody Bleau fifth.
Heat races for the 32 car field were won by Mike Burdo, Chad Miller, Duell and Ostrander. All drivers were scheduled to start the feature event except for Robert Bublak who was disqualified for the night following his heat race for on track actions.
Kim Duell picked up the 25 lap DIRTcar Pro Stock feature win. The win was the veteran drivers 14th career win at the track and first since September of 2010. Duell used his second place starting position to take the early lead. Despite numerous caution periods Duell was able to bring home the win over Kenny Martin, Brandon Emigh, Dave DePaulo and Jay Corbin. Heat races for the 19 car field were won by Bernie Companion and Bill Smith.
Jack Bublak was the winner of the 15 lap Limited Sportsman feature event. Bublak took the lead from Zach Daurio early in the event and quickly pulled away. Bublak led the remainder of the distance to claim the win over Daurio, Ricky Davis, Pete Jeske and Anthony Alger. Heat races for the 22 car field were won by Daurio, Bublak and Rob Maxon.
Josh Coonradt picked up the win in the Don Don’s Delights Street Stock feature event. Paul Braymer held the early lead before giving way to Coonradt on lap 14. Coonradt would bring home the win over Damon Anderson, Yule Cook, Randy Miller and Scott Lawrence. A total of 18 drivers entered the event.
Steve Ryan won the 15 lap Greg’s Towing and Repair Four Cylinder feature event. Ryan brought home the win over Pete Vila, Keith Tesiero, Sr., Dave LaBarge and Wayne Russell. A total of 11 drivers entered the night’s action.
The Albany-Saratoga Speedway returns to action this Friday night with all divisions in action. The Greg’s Towing and Repair Four Cylinders will also be in action. The night will also feature kiddie rides. Racing is set to begin at 7:00 pm.
