Malta, NY – One would certainly call it a memorable night for B.H. Racing Enterprises on Friday night at Albany Saratoga Speedway. While Hearn was picking up the win in the 35 lap Modified feature event his protege Matt Pappa placed himself on two different win lists.
It was apparent right from the start of the Modified main that Hearn was fast — but so were many others in the stellar field. Just past the 10 lap mark Hearn was already riding in top five status,
which was unfortunate for race leader Mark Kislowski. After taking the lead from Floyd Billington on lap 15 Kislowski looked comfortable in his front row spot.
But, Albany Saratoga’s winningest driver (now 107 wins), was better in the third and fourth turn than Kislowski was and by lap 23 Hearn took the race lead — going on to his fourth win of the 2013
season.
“It’s a fight,” said Hearn regarding the fierce intense ride to the front of the field each week. “Everybody is running really good. I tried to run the top there — running on the ragged edge because that’s how you get the wins.”
Kislowski hoped that the lap traffic in the late stages would help his quest to get close to Hearn but was forced to settle for second. Great runs by Jeff Trombley for third, and Tremont for fourth, after both drivers started side by side in the sixth row. Stewart Friesen rounded out the
top five after coming all the way from his 16th place start.
Jake Scarborough jumped out into the lead in the 25 lap Sportsman feature event but he had Sportsman ‘newbie’ Matt Pappa running him down. Pappa was forced to advance into the Sportsman ranks after his Novice Sportsman win earlier in the evening. And Pappa wasted little time putting
himself in the race lead. He took the lead on the fifth circuit and never looked back — visiting victory lane for the second time of the evening.
“I have a great car, it hooked up on both the bottom and the top,” said Pappa. “No matter what line I ran it was good, and towards the end I tried to pace myself not to run off the right rear but it
ended up working out for us.”
Cody Bleu continues his heading-turning performances this year and finished second to Pappa. Robert Bublak and Mike Tholin followed but Tholin, who came all the way from 16th was
disqualified later in the evening. This placed Derrick McGrew and visitor Tim Hartman, Jr. in the top five.
In the Novice Sportsman feature (held over from last week) Brett Hearn’s team driver, Matt Pappa, just wanted another win so he could advance to the Sportsman ranks and he did just that when the 12 lap held-over event was the first to take to the speedway on Friday night. Pappa
started fifth on the grid and wasted little time getting to the front on lap three to an easy win and advancement into the upper ranks.
“The car was great — hooked up into turns three and four real good so hopefully we’ll do good in our next heat because we’ve got to hustle to get ready,” said Pappa in victory lane.
Zach Daurio stayed right behind Pappa after handing the lead over on the third circuit. Colin Chow, Chris Murray and Jesse Edwards rounded out the top five.
The Novice Sportsman opened and closed the racing card for the night. After a good run in the first event Chris Murray jumped out from his seventh place start to grab the race lead on the third time
around the Malta oval. Mike Minick, Rob Maxon, Bob Schmidt and Colin Bokus rounded out the top five.
Rob Yetman’s dominance in the Pro Stock division just continues but this one wouldn’t come easy. Early on Yetman grabbed the race lead but Brandon Emigh wasn’t having it. On lap five Emigh was the one enjoying the view from the front of the field and he was doing everything he could to keep Yetman behind him. Emigh was impressive but couldn’t hold off Yetman, who took the race lead over on lap 19. Yetman went on for win seven this season.
“I want to thank Brandon for a good race — I mean that was a good race,” said Yetman. “He’s been coming on lately and he really came on tonight.”
Emigh didn’t let off him and tried everything for the next handful of laps while Emigh had Bill Smith all over him. The last few laps things scrambled and Dave DePaulo took third place while Bill Smith
and Dan Older rounded out the top five.
Street Stock point leader Bill Duprey has been right there and in search of that first win practically every week this season but just hasn’t been able to get to victory lane. This week Duprey took the
race lead on lap three and never looked back. He was followed by all past race winners, Randy Miller, Justin Smith, Josh Coonradt and David Shippee.
Things… The night started out with victory lane celebrations, one from last week when Jack Gentile picked up his first win of the season. The skies opened up and didn’t allow Gentile his moment of celebration… Frank Hoard III also was out on the track after losing his moment about a month ago when a strong chance of rain didn’t allow any victory interviews. Ironically, Hoard tied in track wins with Gentile with that win a month ago [five wins] but now Gentile’s win last week moved him into the six win category… Matty D., last week’s Modified feature winner, was the fastest in hot laps prior to the night of racing… After contact with Jesse Edwards in the first Novice feature David Emigh went pitside with front end damage… pole sitter Ron Casey went pitside with a left front tire… Jake Zak made an appearance in Malta with the Novice Sportsman class, Zak won the Modified season opener back in 2011 when Albany Saratoga was an asphalt surface… Joe Santoro was a substitute for Byron Wescott… welcome back Mike Perrotte… the third Modified QE found both Peter Britten and Marc Johnson smoking badly. Johnson’s smoking issues started in hot laps earlier in the night… appearance by Tim Hartman Jr. who was trying out his Saturday night set-up… Matt Pappa had to graduate to the Sportsman ranks due to his three Novice Sportsman wins, Pappa came out and easily won his first Sportsman qualifying event… Brett Hearn was the fastest in hot laps prior to the feature events… after a successful run in his QE Kim Duell hit the wall on the first circuit of the Pro Stock feature and went pitside one lap later… big crash on the front stretch on lap 7 of the Sportsman feature. Scott Duell, Anatriello, point leader Jeremy Pitts and Jack Speshock some receiving the worst damage… Peter Britten would start the Modified main in Rich Scagliotta’s car… Marc Johnson, who’s given us many great runs in 2013 did not start the event due to motor issues… lots of damage on John Lindblade’s Novice Sportsman automobile when the second event, which was caution plagued, concluded… the red flag immediately came out in the Street Stock feature when Tyler Michel got upside down at the start of the 20 lap feature. Fortunately Michel was not injured….
