Malta, NY – Matt Depew and Stewart Friesen were the big winners Friday night at the Albany-Saratoga Speedway. Depew, whose family has a long history at the Great Race Place, picked up his first official Upstate GMC Dealers DIRTcar Modified feature event win. He had previously won a Non-Winners event a few years back. Friesen meanwhile won the night’s Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprint A-Main event.Other winners during the night were Rocky Warner (Sportsman), Daniel Sanchez (DIRTcar Pro Stock), Pat Jones (Limited Sportsman) and Randy Miller and Bill Duprey (Street Stocks).Rich Ronca and Mike Perrotte led the Upstate GMC Dealers DIRTcar Modified feature event to the green with Ronca taking the early lead over Perrotte, Bobby Hackel, IV, Matt Depew and Brian Gleason. On lap four Depew took the third spot away from Hackel with Tyler Dippel moving to fifth. On lap eight Depew moved past Perrotte for the second position while Dippel made his way past Hackel for the fourth spot. By lap ten both Keith Flach and Peter Britten had moved past Hackel, dropping the third generation driver to the seventh position.
As Ronca clicked off lap 15 he had Depew all over him for the race lead. The duo raced through heavy lapped traffic which allowed Ronca to open a three car length cushion over Depew. Meanwhile Dippel had moved into third with Britten fourth and Perrotte fifth. Depew took over the top spot on lap 20 as Flach moved to fifth. Dippel closed quickly on Ronca and on lap 24 took over the second position. Ronca didn’t give up and dove back under Dippel for second. On lap 26 Ronca and Dippel made contact in turn number one, causing Dippel to spin and Ronca to go up over the turn two banking.
On the restart Depew would lead with Ronca second, Britten third, Flach fourth and 14th place starter Matt Delorenzo fifth. On lap 28 Britten moved past Ronca for second with Flach following to third. The caution flag waved once again on lap 30 when Don Ronca spun in turn four.
When racing resumed Depew held the lead over Britten, Flach, Delorenzo and Rich Scagliotta. The caution flag waved on lap 31 when three cars tangled in turn two. On the restart Depew held the lead with Britten second, Kenny Tremont, Jr. third, Flach fourth and Delorenzo fifth. The caution flag waved one last time on lap 33 when Dippel and Marc Johnson came together on the back stretch. When racing returned to green Depew took command with Britten and Tremont challenging. Britten tossed the 14B hard into turn four on the last lap to try and get a run but all it did was cost him numerous positions. In the end Depew picked up his first DIRTcar Modified feature event win at the Great Race Place. Tremont finished second with Flach third, Delorenzo fourth and Britten fifth. Heat races for the 28 car field were won by Dippel, Gleason and Elmo Reckner.
Stewart Friesen won the visiting Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprints 25 lap A-Main event. Paulie Colagiovanni and Danny Varin led the YorkMont Auto Auctions sponsored event to the drop of the green with Danny Varin taking the early lead over Chuck Hebing, Colagiovanni, Friesen and Cory Sparks. By lap five the top four had pulled away from the field. Varin’s good ride came to an end on lap five when he tangled with Zach Wiegand who made contact with the turn four wall and rolled down into the path of Varin. Both drivers were done for the evening.
When racing resumed Hebing jumped out to the lead over Colagiovanni, Sparks, Friesen and Scott Holcomb. The caution slowed the field on lap seven when Lowville’s Denny Peebles spun in turn two. Hebing led them back to the green with Friesen now second, Shawn Donath third, Colagiovanni fourth and Steve Poirier fifth.
Lap number 13 was unlucky for Hebing who spun all on his own. He did a donut and continued on but lost three positions. This gave the lead to Friesen. On lap 20 Donath, who was running a distant second to Friesen retired to the infield. In the end no one could catch the man from Spraker’s as he put the CorrPak Racing number 1Z in victory lane. Hebing rebounded to finish second with Colagiovanni third, Poirier fourth and Jason Barney fifth. Heat races for the winged warriors were claimed by Jason Barney, Stewart Friesen and Paul Kinney.

He would take control of third on lap 16 and then a lap later move past Speshock for second. Warner quickly closed in on Bates for the race lead. Sanchez was able to break away from Loubier on lap three and quickly open up a ten car length advantage. That advantage went away on lap four when Bernie Companion spun on lap four.
Sanchez controlled the restart before Brandon Emigh spun on the backstretch, causing the caution to wave again. Sanchez pulled away on the restart with Kenny Martin moving to second. The duo, joined eventually by Dave DePaulo pulled away from the field. With five laps to go the top five were evenly spaced around the four tenths of a mile oval. In the end the win went to Sanchez who was followed across the line by Martin, DePaulo, Robbie Speed and Jeff Washburn. A total of 17 drivers entered the event.
Pat Jones and Anthony Savoca led the field to the green with Jones taking the early lead. After a pair of incidents, racing resumed with Jones out front over George Dorvee and Anthony Alger. Following a Brandon Pitcher spin in turn two, racing returned to the green with Jones leading over Dorvee and Chris Ronca. On lap five Ronca moved past Dorvee for second with Zach Daurio following to third,
Alger’s top five run went south on lap eight when he came to a sop in turn four. When racing resumed the top three remained the same. Two time division feature winner Mike Coffey made a run on the South of Heaven Motorsports number 18 of Daurio for the third spot on lap ten but couldn’t make it stick.
In the end no one could catch the Johnson Controls number five of Jones who brought home his first career feature win. Third generation racer Ronca finished second with Daurio third, Coffey fourth and 18th place starter John Stowell fifth. A total of 19 drivers entered the event.
Miller picked up the held over 20 lap Street Stock event from June 12th. Damon Anderson and Mike Arnold led the field to the green with Anderson taking the early lead. Third place starter Josh Coonradt took to the topside early on, taking over the second position from Bill Duprey on lap two. Coonradt quickly closed on Anderson and when the number five got loose exiting turn three, Coonradt was in the perfect position to take over the race lead.
Following a lap four restart, Duprey turned the heat up on race leader Coonradt. The duo ran side by side for two laps before Coonradt was able to open some daylight. As the race reached the halfway point Duprey had made his way alongside Coonradt yet again however this time five time feature event winner Randy Miller was lurking in third.
On lap 12 Duprey took the top spot however Coonradt and Miller were not giving up. The trio battled for the top spot with Coonradt regaining the lead on lap 14. Miller made his way into second on lap 16 and began pressuring Coonradt for the lead. The duo ran side by side over the final few laps with Miller taking the lead on the final lap to pick up the win. Coonradt finished second with Duprey third, Jason Meltz fourth and Hunter Sanchez fifth.
Curtis Condon jumped out to the early lead in the 20 lap event before a caution on lap one forced a restart. On the restart Condon was the leader however Nathan Dahoda would get past on lap three. Fred Harris spun on lap three, forcing the races second caution period.
Dahoda led on the restart with Duprey and Dahoda following. Anderson spun in turn two on lap four, forcing another restart. Duprey took the lead on the restart with Frank Monroe moving into second.
