Malta, NY – On a night when the Albany-Saratoga Speedway honored some of the legends of our sport, one of those legends took a giant leap to his 13th track championship. Kenny Tremont, Jr. won his sixth Upstate GMC Dealers DIRTcar Modified feature event of the season Friday night and increased his points lead after losing much of it to Brett Hearn one week ago. The win was worth $3,000.
Before racing started an autograph session was held with many of the track’s superstars. Taking part were Hearn, Tremont, Brian Ross, Gibby Fountain, Don Ronca, Dave Lape, Billy Pauch, Sr., Dave Leckonby, Hector Stratton and C.D. Coville.
In other action, Tim Hartman, Jr. (Sportsman), Kenny Martin, Jr. (DIRTcar Pro Stock), Pat Jones (Limited Sportsman) and Bill Duprey (Street Stocks) stood in victory lane.
Alex Bell and Jimmy Cottrell led the Upstate GMC Dealers DIRTcar Modified field into turn one for the first time with Cottrell taking the lead over Bell, Rob Pitcher, Brian Gleason and Mark Kislowski. Gleason took over the third position on lap three while Marc Johnson was all over Kislowski for fifth. Johnson claimed the position on lap four. As the field made their way through turn four Bell slowed. In the ensuing jingle Gleason, Kislowski and Brett Hearn became involved.
On the restart Cottrell held the top spot with Johnson, Pitcher, Keith Flach and Ronnie Johnson following. Pitcher spun in turn four on lap seven to bring out the caution flag. When racing resumed Gleason spun in turn two. On the restart Marc Johnson moved to the lead with Cottrell, Kenny Tremont, Jr., Ronnie Johnson and Flach following. Tremont moved to second on lap ten as Jim Nagle spun in turn four.
When the field returned to green Johnson continued to lead with Tremont all over him. Ronnie Johnson ran third with Peter Britten fourth and Matt Delorenzo fifth. A lap later Tremont took over the lead from Johnson and began to open a large lead. Tyler Dipple slowed on lap 17 forcing another caution period. On the restart Tremont and Johnson again ran one-two, however Britten took over third with Ronnie Johnson fourth and Keith Flach fifth.
As the race moved into the later stages Britten looked to find the fast lane. He moved to second on lap 22 and set his sights on Tremont. Hearn meanwhile battled back and took over fifth from Flach on lap 24. With five laps to go Tremont had nearly a straightaway lead over Britten. Tremont led the rest of the way to take the win over Britten, Marc Johnson, Ronnie Johnson and Hearn. A total of three heat races qualified the 27 car field with wins going to Gleason, Dippel and Hearn.
Jack Swinton and John Proctor led the field to the start with Swinton taking the early lead over Proctor, Andrew Buff, David Schilling and Dave Baranowski, Jr. Connor Cleveland took fifth from Baranowski on lap three and closed in on Buff. Proctor meanwhile took over the lead on lap four and a lap later gave way to Schilling. Cleveland moved into third at the same time with Tim Hartman, Jr. and Joey Scarborough following.
Chris Ronca spun in turn four on lap eight, bringing out the caution flag. On the restart Cleveland moved out front with Schilling a close second. A tangle in turn four slowed the field on lap nine. On the restart it was again Cleveland out front with Schilling, Baranowski, Hartman and Derrick McGrew following. Hartman moved past Schilling and Baranowski for second soon after with McGrew taking fourth on lap 15.
Hartman quickly closed on Cleveland and by lap 16 was alongside. Hartman bobbled on lap 17 which allowed Cleveland to open a small lead. Hartman closed right back in and began to challenge Cleveland for the lead. McGrew took over third from Schilling on lap 21 as Cleveland began to pull away from Hartman. Buff made heavy contact with the implement tire in turn two on lap 23 forcing a caution.
On the restart Cleveland and Hartman made contact coming out of turn four and then continued until the end of the backstretch. Cleveland ended up flying through the infield as Hartman took over the lead. Hartman led the last lap to take the win over McGrew, Schilling, Rocky Warner and Baranowski. A total of 26 drivers were on hand with heat races being claimed by Hartman, Baranowski and Schilling.
Kenny Martin won the 25 lap DIRTcar Pro Stock feature event. Rookie Scott Lawrence and Pete Porter led the field to the green with leading the field into turn one. Byron Wescott spun in turn one on the start, causing an early yellow flag to wave. After a failed restart, racing resumed third place starter Chuck Dumblewski took over the race lead. Another incident involving Wescott, his fourth of the event, brought out the caution on lap two.
Racing resumed with Dumblewski leading and Robbie Speedway taking second from Norm Loubier. The caution flag waved again on lap four when an incident involving Bernie Companion slowed the field. On the restart Dumblewski and Speed battled for the top spot with Speed taking over. On lap eight Kim Duell moved past Dumblewski for the second spot with Martin following to third.
After an incident on lap 11, Speed continued to lead with Duell and Martin following. On lap 15 Martin was able to pull alongside Duell and a lap later take over second. True rookie Nick Arnold spun on lap 16 forcing another restart. When racing resumed Speed and Martin pulled away from Duell before the caution flag slowing the field on lap 18 for a turn four jingle. Speed led when racing resumed however Martin moved to the lead on lap 20 as Speed suffered from front end damage. In the end Martin survived a lap 24 restart to take the win over Duell, Brandon Emigh, Daniel Sanchez and Companion. Heat races for the 18 car field were won by Companion, Emigh and Robbie Speed.
George Dorvee and Zach Daurio led the field to the green with Daurio taking the early lead over Pat Jones. The caution flag waved on lap eight when Mike Coffey spun in turn two. Jones led on the restart with Daurio and Ken Conroy in pursuit. A caution flag on lap 13 slowed the event and forced a late race restart.
Jones remained in control on the restart with Conroy in second and Daurio battling Brandon Pitcher for third. In the end Jones held on for the win over Conroy, Daurio, Pitcher and Rob Lanfear. The heat races for the 20 car field were won by Lanfear, Jones and Dorvee.
Bill Duprey won the 20 lap Street Stock feature event. Fred Harris and John Morris, Jr. led the field to the green with Morris taking the early lead. A spin by Michael Sanchez would bring out the caution flag on lap two. On the restart Morris continued to lead and held the top spot until the caution waved again on lap five when Mike Arnold lost a wheel on his yellow and blue racer.
Morris controlled the restart despite heavy pressure from Damon Anderson, Duprey, Randy Miller and Josh Coonradt. Hunter Sanchez spun on lap eight causing another restart. On the restart Duprey took the top spot with Miller moving to second. Coonradt moved past Miller for second on lap 12 and set his sights on Duprey.
