Elmo’s Speed & Supply Swap Meet 11/11/18
MALTA, NY – Chris Reckner might not have the biggest swap meet in the Capital District, but for now, he’s willing to settle for No. 2.
The third annual swap meet sponsored by Elmo’s Speed & Supply will be held at Albany-Saratoga Speedway from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 11. The theme of the day will be buy, sell or trade. There is a $10 fee for truck vendors, and the charge is $20 for truck and trailer vendors. Vendor access will begin at 8 a.m.
But the important part, according to Reckner, who is the co-owner of Elmo’s Speed & Supply with his father, Elmo, is that all proceeds will go to the Albany-Saratoga Speedway drivers’ point fund.
“I’m not taking a nickel, and Lyle [Albany-Saratoga promoter Lyle DeVore] isn’t taking any money,” Reckner said. “I’m just helping coordinate it, and put some money into the point fund.”
Although this is the third year for the swap meet, it’s the first time it’s going to be held at Albany-Saratoga Speedway.
“The first year was OK, but last year, we ran out of room,” said Reckner. “We were parking cars in our neighbor’s yard and down the road. Then my father sold the body shop, so we needed another location. Lyle has concessions, he has bathrooms, and everyone knows where the speedway is.”
Just as the swap meet has grown, so has Elmo’s Speed & Supply.
“In the last five years, we’ve gone from selling used parts to being a full blown speed shop,” Reckner said. “We’ve got Bicknell chassis, and we sell both Hoosiers and American Racers, everything.
“But we still do a lot with used parts. Our goal is to get drivers back on track as quick as possible with reasonable parts, anything to keep them racing again.”
When it comes to supporting local dirt track racing, the Reckners aren’t afraid to open their wallets. Elmo’s Speed & Supply is also a title sponsor for the King of Dirt 358 Series.
“We want to support the people who support us,” said Reckner. “That’s one of the reasons we’re putting all of the proceeds into the drivers’ point fund.
“We’ve had a lot of interest so far,” he added. “It’s not going to be as big as Lebanon Valley’s swap meet, but hopefully, we can get something decent going.”
