Britten Ready for Albany-Saratoga Return
Malta, NY – The Albany-Saratoga Speedway is a mere few weeks away from dropping the green flag on the 2014 racing season. This season will be the third under the guidance of track promoter Lyle DeVore. When the green flag drops on Friday evening April 18th, the field will once again have an international flavor.
One year ago Australian driver Peter Britten declared his intentions to compete as a weekly regular at the fast Saratoga County oval. The man known as the Thunder from Down Under will once again call the Great Race Place home. He will once again be piloting the Jerry Darrah owned number 14B.
”Jerry and I will be coming back to Albany-Saratoga with the 14B,” Britten said. “We will start off the year running a big block and I will be racing all season at Albany-Saratoga with Jerry (Darrah). I am looking forward to it, I am interested in seeing how the big block goes there in comparison to the small block. I think it should be fun; we had a great time last year. The track was really racy.”
Britten would continue, “We ran pretty good there last year and we are looking to build on that this year.”
In 2013 Britten won one feature event. That win came seven races in, on June 21st, and made history as Britten became the first driver born outside of North America to win a race at the track. Britten and Darrah started all 17 events last season and earned four top five finishes and 13 top tens. He finished sixth in the final point standings and had an average finish of 7.94.
As a track rookie in 2013, Britten turned some heads and of course learned a few things along the way.
“When you go to a track for the first time you just try and figure out where to run,” Britten said. “The more times you run there the more used to the track you get. You learn the little inconsistencies in the track and where the lines are, how to race certain people and more importantly how certain people race you. Once you get your basic package you just try to tweak it from there. The more laps you can run the better you will get.”
Britten’s goals for the new season aren’t that different from any driver, he wants to win.
“You always want to win,” Britten offered. “That is why you’re in racing. We want to win as many races as we can, if we can do that then the championship will take care of itself.”
Like all of us Britten is looking forward to the 2014 season. For Britten and other drivers, twisting his DIRTcar Modified around the fast four tenths mile is nothing short of fun.
“I look forward to the racing,” Britten said. “Albany-Saratoga is a fun track and racy. I just enjoy racing, it’s an enjoyable experience. I enjoy working with Lyle (DeVore); he is a great guy to deal with.”
Britten will not be the only driver based in Central New York to make his way east on Friday nights. Britten’s friend and teammate away from the Great Race Place, Rich Scagliotta, will also be calling the Albany-Saratoga Speedway home. The New Jersey resident will be a regular as often as his business schedule allows.
