Albany-Saratoga Set to Wave Green Flag Friday April 18th
Malta, NY – The Albany-Saratoga Speedway is set to wave the green flag for the first race of 2014 on Friday evening. The season opener will be the third under promoter Lyle DeVore and staff. The night’s activities will begin at 7 pm.
On tap for the 2014 season opener will be the DIRTcar Modifieds, Sportsman, DIRTcar Pro Stocks, Limited Sportsman, Street Stocks and Four Cylinders. In addition, the band, “The Just Looking Band” will be on hand for a pre-race concert. Also on hand will be Mickey the Clown, who will be giving out free balloons to the kids.
Since DeVore resurrected the four-tenths of a mile track, no DIRTcar Modified driver has been able to repeat as opening day winner. Stewart Friesen won the first event on Thursday April 19th, 2012 while Watertown, New York’s Tim McCreadie won the second day of the season opening double header on April 20th. Last season eventual track champion Brett Hearn beat a stout 29 car field to earn the opening day checkered flag.
In the Sportsman ranks, Derrick McGrew has won each season opener. In 2012 the veteran pilot beat out Joey Budka and Jeff Rockefeller for the win. A total of 58 drivers entered the event. One year ago McGrew out ran Scott Duell and Cody Bleau for the win. Connor Cleveland won last season’s Limited Sportsman (then called Novice Sportsman) season opener.
In the full fender ranks Rob Langevin was victorious in the 2012 Pro Stock opener while Rob Yetman won last year’s opening event. Bill Dupree won the 2012 season opening Street Stock feature event while Matt Mosher won last year’s event. Chris VanDeputte and Dan Older, Jr. won the 2012 Four Cylinder openers.
