Albany-Saratoga Season Goes Green on April 18th
Malta, NY – The Albany-Saratoga Speedway is set to open for its third consecutive season under promoter Lyle Devore in just about two months’ time. The ultra-fast four tenths of a mile oval will take the green for the first time in 2014 on Friday evening April 18th.
The night will see all weekly divisions in action plus the Four Cylinders. As was the case in 2013, the weekly divisions at Albany-Saratoga will consist of the DIRTcar Modifieds, Sportsman, DIRTcar Pro Stocks, Novice Sportsman and Street Stocks. The full schedule will be released around the first weekend in March.
As an added attraction the band “Just Looking” will be performing on opening night. The band is based out of Saratoga Springs and offers Rock n Roll and some dance music. For more information on the band please search “Just Looking Band” on Facebook.
One year ago Sussex, New Jersey’s Brett Hearn picked up the opening day feature win over a stout field of DIRTcar Modifieds. The win would propel him to the 2013 track championship. He, along with the other champions will be honored on Saturday evening March 8th at the Holiday Inn – Saratoga Springs.
“We are just carrying this thing over from last year,” Hearn said after last season’s season opener. “I really don’t know what it’s all about but it’s working for me. Once it went single file I was pretty confident that we were pretty good at that point. From what I have been told we were pretty good at the end.”
The 2012 season saw the season opener held over two days, in a double header format. On Thursday evening Spraker’s, New York hot shoe Stewart Friesen claimed the win for the late Marty Burdick, while on Friday night Watertown’s World of Outlaw Late Model kingpin Tim McCreadie brought home the checkered flag.
“It’s pretty cool to be the first dirt winner in the new era,” Friesen said following that 2012 win. “Tonight was good, track position was key along with being up front. It was a battle royal with Ken (Tremont, Jr.) – it was tight. I saw him get up on the outside and I tried to slide him and get his line. We were able to hold him off.”
“Kudos to the track crew, it’s as smooth as glass,” McCreadie said after the Friday night win. “In the hot laps before the feature we were off a little bit, so we turned it back to where we were in the heat. It felt good, I saw Brett once early in the race and never saw him again so I didn’t know if he was better than me or if I was better than him but I didn’t like seeing him at the end – that’s for sure.”
Derrick McGrew and Rob Yetman have swept the opening day victories in the Sportsman and DIRTcar Pro Stock divisions since The Great Race Place returned to the clay surface in 2012. Connor Cleveland won the Novice Sportsman event in 2013 while Joey Scarborough won the “rookie” feature in 2012.
In other full fender action Bill Dupree and Matt Mosher were victorious in the Street Stock division season openers in 2012 and 2013 respectfully. In 2012 Chris VanDeputte (Dual Cam) and Dan Older, Jr. (Single Cam) won the opening day events while last season Todd Goldstein (Dual Cam) and Mark Lindblade (Single Cam) were opening event winners.
