Albany-Saratoga Opens Gates For Sunday Afternoon Practice
Malta, NY – Under sunny skies the Albany-Saratoga Speedway opened the gates for the first time in the 2015 racing season Sunday afternoon. On tap was a day full of practice and inspection for the competitors in all of the track’s weekly divisions as well as some other divisions that only make special appearances at the fast, four tenths of a mile oval.
In all, more than 110 drivers went through technical inspection and took part in the numerous practice sessions held throughout the afternoon. An impressive crowd passed through the gates to get their first glimpse of on-track action this season.
The DIRTcar Modified division brought about 15 cars to the speedway. Leading the way with the quickest lap time was Duanesburg veteran Ronnie Johnson. Johnson circled the Lyle DeVore prepped oval in 16.264 seconds. Scott Duell took laps in his Lazzaro’s Auto Body/Tilework by Damon Anderson number 14. Duell returns to the DIRTcar Modified division after competing in the Sportsman division the past few seasons. Jesse Mueller made his DIRTcar Modified debut at the track. The North Country former pavement star was getting some experience on the Great Race Place clay.
As expected, the Sportsman division checked in with the highest car count. Between the regular and limited divisions nearly 50 drivers went through inspection and turned some shakedown laps. Turning quick time was a veteran from the Green Mountain State – John Scarborough. Scarborough turned a lap of 17.184 seconds to lead all.
Just shy of 20 DIRTcar Pro Stock drivers took part in Sunday’s activities. The top full fender division at the track was full of new paint schemes and gorgeous rides. Turning the quickest lap was the defending track champion Rob Yetman. Yetman turned in a lap of 18.803 seconds. Among the participants was former Street Stock division standout Scott Lawrence, who will enter his rookie season in the DIRTcar Pro Stock ranks.
The Albany-Saratoga Speedway will kick off their 50th season of racing this Friday evening, April 17th. All weekly divisions will be in action along with the Greg’s Towing and Repair Four Cylinders. The DIRTcar Modifieds will be racing for $3,000 to win. Racing is set to begin at 7 pm with pit gates opening at 4 pm and grandstand gates opening at 5 pm.
