A Malta Mumble 8/30/13
Last Friday night Albany Saratoga Speedway offered up ‘Triple 20s’ for the Modifieds — a format that isn’t usually a real popular one with race teams/drivers. Stewart Friesen is one that was all for mixing up the schedule of events for a change.
“I like the format tonight,” said Friesen who picked up the win in the third Modified feature event. “We’re not right up there in the points battle for the title so we were able to try some different things.”
Despite spending the 2013 race season in the Jake Spraker owned automobile, last Friday he was behind the wheel of the Jeff Daley and Sons #44. During the second feature event the team was trying out a carburetor that they would be running in an upcoming race scheduled for Grandview Speedway.
“We changed it back for the third 20 and we had a good starting spot so we took advantage of it,” recalled Friesen of his first Modified victory of the season at AS.
In a big block anyhow — earlier this season Friesen won when both the DMA USAC Midgets and Empire Super Sprint Clubs visited the Malta oval.
“We came in with the midget and the sprint and we had a home track advantage on those guys so that definitely helped,” said Friesen who is just happy to get the Modified win behind him as well.
“I’m ecstatic tonight,” said Friesen pit side after the win. “Overall it’s been a struggle all year so it’s good to get a win. This is a very competitive track so it’s tough — there’s a lot of good cars and starting position seems key every week.”
Only two weeks remain at the ‘Great Race Place’ — tonight promoter DeVore will host the DMA USAC Midgets and it is the final night of points for the Modifieds and Pro Stocks. The Sportsman and Street Stocks will also make up the schedule.
Pit gates open at 4:00 p.m. with the grandstands opening at 5:00 p.m. Race time is 7:00 p.m. The front gate is $10 for adults, kids under 12 are $2.00. Entry in the pit area is $20 for members and $25.00 for non-members.
