MALTA – Felix Roy’s outstanding rookie season at Albany-Saratoga Speedway got a little better Friday night.
Roy held off two-time champion Peter Britten on a late restart to record his first career big block victory in the 35-lap Next Generation Roofing modified feature at the historic Malta track.
This was also Roy’s first victory with crew chief Chris Reckner, who joined forces with Roy during the winter to field a car for the talented Canadian driver at Albany-Saratoga. The big block modified is housed at Elmo’s Speed Supply in Ballston Lake and Roy shows up on Friday nights to do the driving.
“The car was perfect tonight,” said Roy, who also has two victories in the DiCarlo Auto Body 358 Shootout Series at Malta this season. “I could go top or bottom. I could run just about anywhere I wanted to.”
Roy showed that early in Friday night’s feature. He went to the top early and after starting fifth, only needed seven laps to move into second.
With pole-sitter James Meehan setting a quick pace, Roy then moved to the bottom and when Meehan drifted wide in the third turn on lap 20, Roy had the lead.
The first 28 laps were run under green-flag conditions, and when Matt DeLorenzo brought out the only caution of the race on lap 29, Roy knew he was going to have his hands full.
“I was a little worried, yes,” he said. “I saw Peter Britten next to me. I knew I had to stay calm on top and not make any mistakes.”
Roy hit the restart perfectly, and easily pulled away for his first career big block win, which paid $2,525 to win through sponsorship from Next Generation Roofing.
Britten, who admitted that he has been struggling so far this season, tried to find some good in his second-place finish.
“You want to win any time you’re in a position to win,” he said, “but the way we’ve been running, it’s a relief to have a good run.”
Meehan finished third, which was his best finish of the season, while Rich Scagliotta crossed the finish line fourth, just the fifth time in his career that he’s cracked the top five at Malta. Adam Pierson came from his 10th starting position to finish fifth.
Justin Stone won the Four States Enterprises Dash for Cash and took home a $200 bonus.
Connor Crane made a late charge around the top, caught leader Drew Cormie and recorded his second win of the season in the 25-lap sportsman feature, which was run caution-free, a rare feat for that division at Malta.
Crane started 13th, while Cormie started on the pole. Cormie had opened up a comfortable lead by lap 15, leaving Joey Scarborough and Chad Gregory to battle for second, but suddenly, Crane was right in the middle of everything.
Crane got past Scarborough for third on lap 19, bounced off the frontstretch wall on lap 20, without losing any ground, then rocketed by Gregory for second on lap 21. Coming down to get the white flag, Crane got his nose in front of Cormie as they hit the start-finish line and then came away with the victory.
Scarborough, Gregory and Craig Wholey completed the top five.
Jordan Modiano started on the pole and led all 20 laps to come away with his third career victory in the 25-lap pro stock feature. Modiano had his hands full with Rich Crane in the first half of the race and Modiano’s scariest moment on his way to the win came on a restart on lap 15, when he, Kim Duell and Chris Stalker got three-wide in turn four and traded some paint. But somehow, none of the top three lost control of their cars, and Modiano went on to get the win, with Duell second and Pete Stefanaski third, passing Stalker on the final lap.
Nick Arnold made a late run to come away with his second consecutive win in the 20-lap limited sportsman feature. Jarron Maguire looked like he might be on the way to his first career win, as he started on the pole and led the first 14 laps. But something broke in the car on lap 15, bringing out a caution and giving the lead to David Zelker.
Arnold lined up third on the restart, went as low as he could and took over the lead coming out of the fourth turn following the restart. Alex Smith and Zelker completed the podium.
PJ Cram Jr outdueled Matt Mosher to come his second straight win and fourth overall victory of the season in the 20-lap street stock feature, which paid $500 to win through sponsorship from Ghent Wood Products. Crame started 15th, but was up to fourth by the halfway point of the race and was closing on Shane Wetherington, Matt Mosher and Mark Burch.
Cram took the No. 3 spot away from Burch going down the backstretch on lap 12, and stuck his nose past Mosher with five to go. Wetherington drifted wide in turn four on lap 18, giving Cram an opening, and the next time around, Wetherington bounced off the inside barrier in the first turn and shot to the outside, allowing Cram to dart by on the inside to get the lead.
Mosher also got by Wetherington on the final lap to finish second. Wetherington, Chris Murray and Burch completed the top five.
Adam Montville picked up his second straight dual-cam victory in the four-cylinder feature, while Daniel Joubert finished fourth overall and had the first single-cam car across the finish line. David Frame made a late charge to finish second, just a car length behind Montville.
