DIRTCar Modifieds Take Center Stage in 2016

Malta, NY – The Albany-Saratoga Speedway will open their gates for the first official event of the 2016 season on Friday April 22nd. As has been the case for many seasons, the DIRTcar Modifieds will take center stage with what is arguably the best field in the Northeast.

When the green flag waves in just under three weeks’ time, defending track champion Kenny Tremont, Jr. will lead the field in defense of his crown. His weekly arch rival – New Jersey’s Brett Hearn, will also be in attendance looking to dethrone the Sand Lake Slingshot. Tremont claimed the 2015 crown by 69 points over Hearn, Marc Johnson, Peter Britten and Ronnie Johnson.

The 2016 Albany-Saratoga Speedway schedule is full of specials for the DIRTcar Modified division. A look at the schedule shows a pair of $3,000 to win feature events bookending the points season. The seasons point finale is on September 2nd.

As the calendar flips through the month of May and June three events highlight the schedule. The first is the first special qualifier for the division. On May 13th the DIRTcar Modified division will compete in a King of the Catskills qualifier. The King of the Catskills takes place at the Accord Speedway on September 16th. The second and final qualifier will hit the track on June 24th when the feature winner will earn a spot in the Outlaw 200 at the Fulton Speedway on October 1st.

Mark your calendars for Tuesday night June 28th. The stars and cars of the Super DIRTcar Series make their way to the Great Race Place with the running of the 8th annual Big Show. The Brett Hearn promoted event will feature Kenny Wallace and see the Sportsman division once again as the undercard. Adult general admission is $24 while kids are $5.

On Friday evening July 29th track promoter Lyle DeVore is bringing back one of the most popular events on the schedule. Twin 20 lap DIRTcar Modified features will be held as the season rolls through its second half. The season will conclude on September 16th with a Modified special, which is a part of the Fall Finale.

The action at the Albany-Saratoga Speedway is presented by A-Verdi Storage Containers, Andy’s Speed Shop, Budweiser, Cleveland Brothers, County Waste, E. Stewart Jones, Ferris, Garone’s Concrete, Herrington Farms, Lazzaro’s Auto Body, Lussier Excavating, Morris Ford, Pallette Stone Corp, Quad Graphics, Recovery Sports Grill, Rifenburg Construction, Rounds Paving, Satch Sales, Sherwin-Williams, Smoker’s Choice, Snap-On Tools, Sysco, Tinkers, Upstate Buick GMC Dealers, VP Race Fuels and Wendy’s Restaurants.

The Albany-Saratoga Speedway will open its doors on Sunday April 17th for a practice session. The season is set to kick off on Friday night April 22nd with all divisions in actions including the Greg’s Towing and Repair Four Cylinders. The DIRTcar Modified division will compete for a $3,000 top prize. Sportsman Division Highlight 2016 Schedule At Albany-Saratoga

Malta, NY – The Sportsman division at the Albany-Saratoga Speedway has been one of the most impressive divisions in not only the Capital District but in the racing circles of the Northeastern United States and Canada. Since the return to the clay surface under the direction of Lyle DeVore a few seasons ago, the division has brought with it record car counts, numerous first time winners and a level of competition that is second to none.

The trend will continue in 2016 as the Great Race Place presents its 51st season of action. The schedule is packed full of special events for the Sportsman division as the drivers continue to rewrite the record books.

The Featherfoot Series for the Sportsman division will make its return for the 2016 season. This year’s series is once again presented by Ron Mensing and will carry an enlarged purse and season ending point fund. The first of the five events that make up the series will hit the track on April 29th. The remaining events will be June 3rd (NYSSCA Night), July 8th (with the King of Dirt Pro Stock Series), August 5th (with the DMA USAC Midgets) and August 26th (Back to School Raffle Night).

On June 10th the racing community will come together to honor a driver that turned a lot of laps at the fast, four tenths of a mile oval. The annual Mark Hughes Memorial event for the Sportsman division will once again take to the track as we honor a fan favorite who left us too soon.

In its second full season the King of Dirt Sportsman Series will return to the Great Race Place for two visits. The first will be on Friday night June 24th as Elmo’s Auto Body brings the 30 lap, $1,000 to win ($100 to start) Friday Night Lights event to the track. The series returns to Albany-Saratoga on Friday night September 9th for the annual Northeast Crate Nationals. This year the nationals are being presented by Dodson Construction, Dean’s Electrical Service, Elmo’s Speed Supply and High Octane Heating and Cooling. The series will also visit the Lebanon Valley Speedway twice this season (July 9th and September 1st).

As they have the past two seasons, the Sportsman division will also be a part of Brett Hearn’s Big Show 8 program on June 28th. The division will serve as the under card to the night’s Super DIRTcar Series Big Block Modified event. The final night of points for the Sportsman division will take place on Labor Day Weekend, September 2nd.

Taking a look back to the 2015 season, Derrick McGrew picked up the Sportsman division track championship. He beat out Rocky Warner by four points to claim the title. Jeremy Pitts, a two-time track champion finished third with Hunter Bates and Tim Hartman, Jr. rounding out the top five.

Once again the Limited Sportsman division will return to weekly action at the Great Race Place. As in years past, once a driver picks up three feature wins in the division they graduate to the regular Sportsman division.

The action at the Albany-Saratoga Speedway is presented by A-Verdi Storage Containers, Andy’s Speed Shop, Budweiser, Cleveland Brothers, County Waste, E. Stewart Jones, Ferris, Garone’s Concrete, Herrington Farms, Lazzaro’s Auto Body, Lussier Excavating, Morris Ford, Pallette Stone Corp, Quad Graphics, Recovery Sports Grill, Rifenburg Construction, Rounds Paving, Satch Sales, Sherwin-Williams, Smoker’s Choice, Snap-On Tools, Sysco, Tinkers, Upstate Buick GMC Dealers, VP Race Fuels and Wendy’s Restaurants.

The Albany-Saratoga Speedway will open its doors on Sunday April 17th for a practice session. The season is set to kick off on Friday night April 22nd with all divisions in action including the Greg’s Towing and Repair Four Cylinders. The DIRTcar Modified division will compete for a $3,000 top prize. Albany-Saratoga Closes Out 50th Season With Banquet

2015 50th Anniversary Awards Display

2015 50th Anniversary Awards Display

The Albany-Saratoga Speedway closed the curtain on their 50th season of racing Saturday night with the annual Awards Banquet. The event was held at the Saratoga/Wilton Elks Lodge in Saratoga Springs and was catered by Waterford Banquets. Well over 300 drivers, crews, fans and officials attended the night’s activities.

Track Promoter Lyle DeVore kicked off the festivities by addressing the large crowd. DeVore started by offering a special thanks and then looked back at the 2015 season at the Great Race Place.

“Racing is a difficult game,” DeVore said. “Whether it is from your standpoint or our standpoint it is hard to get through an entire season. I want to thank Marcy and Mia, they live with me, and they deal with me with two race tracks. They are brainstorming through the night, they are working on different kids promotions throughout the season, and they have great ideas. These two are part of the driving force for me in executing what we do each and every Friday night.”

DeVore would continue, “The 2015 season was Albany-Saratoga Speedway’s 50th year. We tried a lot of different promotions and brought in a lot of drivers. The 2015 season was a good one. I truly appreciate the opportunity to be a part of the gang every Friday night.”

As his speech closed Devore spoke about the upcoming 2016 season at the Great Race Place. “We are moving full steam ahead in 2016. We have new billboards on the backstretch, new hospitality suites, some more paving and more. We will start with a warm up session on April 17th with gates opening at 9:00 am so we can get everyone inspected. We will open the next Friday night. If the weather doesn’t cooperate we will run on that Sunday at 4:00 pm. We do not want to miss a week.”

The top ten in each of the four weekly divisions were honored at the banquet and called to the stage by track announcers Danny Martin and Mike Warren.

In the Upstate GMC Dealers DIRTcar Modified division Kenny Tremont, Jr. picked up his record 13th track championship. The Sand Lake Slingshot did so with six feature wins, 16 top five finishes and 18 top tens.

“It (lucky number 13) was the day that I was born on, I think it is a great number,” Tremont said. “I really appreciate being able to win this championship. I want to say a special thank you to my father (Ken Tremont, Sr.). He is 77 years old and still does the motors for us. He impresses me and has more drive than anyone I know. We have a really good, rock solid team and hopefully next year will be just as good.”

Finishing in positions two through ten were Brett Hearn, Marc Johnson, Peter Britten, Ronnie Johnson, Keith Flach, Matt Delorenzo, Mark Kislowski, Elmo Reckner and Neil Stratton. Matt DePew finished 11th in points and won the division’s Most Memorable Moment Award. Asphalt turned DIRTcar Modified driver Jesse Mueller was awarded the Rookie of the Year award.

Derrick McGrew claimed his first Sportsman division track title. McGrew piloted the Parillo Services car to two feature wins, six top five finishes and 16 top tens.

“I want to thank everyone who has helped me get to this point,” McGrew said. “Hopefully we can do it again one day. Over the years we have gotten a lot of wins and matured. We used some of that wisdom we have learned and put some wins together and won the championship.”

After years of trying, the Wheelman Randy Miller won his first career Street Stock division track title. Miller visited victory lane 11 times during the season and finished in the top five 13 times.

Those three drivers – Andrew Buff, Mike Coffey and Chris Ronca all earned the Outstanding Performance Award. Ronca was also awarded with the Most Memorable Moments Award.

Each season the Albany-Saratoga Speedway awards one person with the Spirit Award. This award goes to someone who makes a difference at the track each week. This year’s award was given to Dan Archer. Archer is a track employee who started working at the facility back in the 1980s and continues to do just about everything today. The previous two winners of the award were Colin Bokus and Shannon Donnelly.

The 2016 season schedule was also released at the banquet. A detailed release about the schedule will be forthcoming in the next few weeks. Numerous special events dot the calendar including the return of Ron Mensing’s Featherfoot Warrior Series for the Sportsman division. This season it will be a series again with a point fund.

The Lucas Oil Empire Super Sprints and Patriot Sprint Tour each make stops at the track in 2016 as well as the CRSA RaceSaver Sprints and Electric City Riders. Brett Hearn’s Big Show number eight will be presented on June 28th, again apart of the Super DIRTcar Series for Big Block Modifieds.
